Rathfriland Markethouse

Went to Rathfriland and took some photographs of the Markethouse. Also took some of the old Clanwilliam Arms which was a hotel owned by the family. The markethouse has been empty now for some time and is in a state of disrepair. This is sad to see as it stands proudly in the middle of the square. At a time there would have been thatched houses on the other side of the square. The signs are from Rathfriland Historical Society which has highlighted places of historical interest in Rathfriland.

  1. Was looking at Rathfriland Market House coming from Mournes the other week. Was just thinking of ones i've seen in England, and how they are fully functional and the centre of activity in the town centres. Wouldn't it be great to have it the same.

  2. Yes David, it's such a shame that it is lying idle. There's so much history about it that it really should be a tourist attraction.

  3. Love the pictures, i think a number of years ago, the Outlook in Rathfriland published a report on the Market House and enlisted buildings of Rathfriland.
